Specifying a Custom Neodymium Magnet

Prepare a dimensioned drawing and application requirements before requesting a custom neodymium magnet. The calculator provides an initial estimate to discuss.

Define the geometry

State the units on the drawing. For a disc, give diameter and thickness; for a block, give length, width and thickness; for a ring, give outer diameter, inner diameter and thickness. Include the position and dimensions of holes or countersinks, and identify the critical tolerances.

Specify the magnetic material

Give the requested grade, coating and direction of magnetisation if these are already defined. If they are not, describe the function of the magnet and the space available so the options can be discussed. Do not select a grade solely from a headline holding-force figure; the full assembly matters.

Explain the working environment

Include operating temperature, moisture exposure, mating material, intervening layers and the direction of the load. If there is a gap between the magnet and its counterpart, state the expected minimum and maximum gap. Provide a diagram if words do not clearly show the pole orientation or contact faces.

Include the buying requirements

State the initial quantity, likely repeat quantities, required date and delivery location. Identify inspection or documentation needs for us to confirm. Check whether a standard catalogue part already meets your drawing before specifying a new part.

From estimate to confirmed specification

Use the custom magnet calculator, then contact Magnets Direct with the estimate and drawing. Confirm the final dimensions, tolerances, material, coating, magnetisation, price and lead time before placing a production order. Read the magnet strength guide when defining performance requirements.
